Accessible Walk-In Shower | Leeds | More Ability

Published: 20 August 2024

Background

The project took place in a 1990s bungalow located in Leeds, home to mum and daughter who lived together.

The bathroom had been adapted into a wet room with a walk-in bath by the local council prior to their purchase of the property. However, the installation was not up to standard, resulting in issues such as the floor beginning to lift, which posed safety concerns and increased the risk of water damage. The wet room also had a centre drain that required mopping after every use, making it inconvenient for daily use.

The daughter contacted More Ability, seeking a bathroom renovation that would cater to her mother’s needs while also providing a stylish, future-proof design suitable for all generations in the household.

Brief

The clients were certain they wanted to replace the wet room with an alternative shower solution, but they were unsure about the specific type of shower or how it could be best incorporated into the existing space.

They sought a solution that would be safe and accessible for the mother, without sacrificing style. The design needed to avoid a clinical look, instead favouring a modern, clean, and easy-to-maintain appearance.

The removal of the walk-in bath was also a priority, as was the creative concealment of all pipework to maintain a tidy aesthetic. Given the bathroom's concrete floor, the project required an intensive, skilled approach, particularly for installing new plumbing and drainage.

What We Did

Understanding the clients’ uncertainty about the best shower solution, our senior designer, Garry, provided expert guidance. Garry helped the clients explore various options, ultimately recommending an accessible walk-in shower that would be ideal for their needs and the layout of their bathroom.

The project began with the removal of the existing, poorly fitted wet room floor, which was replaced with high-quality, non-slip flooring that was both durable and visually appealing.

The walk-in bath, no longer necessary, was carefully removed, freeing up space and allowing for a more functional layout. Following Garry’s expert design, a modern walk-in shower featuring a sleek glass screen and door was installed.

This design provided easy access for the mother and eliminated the need for mopping the floor after each use. A new drainage system was installed to ensure efficient water management.

To achieve the clean and tidy look the clients desired, all pipework was creatively concealed using bespoke boxing, which enhanced the bathroom's appearance and made it easier to maintain.

The bathroom’s concrete floor presented a significant challenge, requiring the entire space to be replumbed. Chris, the multi-skilled fitter allocated to the job, expertly dug up the concrete floor to sink the shower tray and relocate the existing drain, ensuring the installation met the highest standards.

Throughout the project, we focused on creating a design that was both stylish and accessible, avoiding any clinical elements while ensuring all problems with the existing design were overcome.

The fixtures and fittings, including marble effect wall boards and striking modular bathroom storage were chosen for their practicality and modern appearance, ensuring the bathroom would serve the needs of all generations for years to come.

End Result

The completed project perfectly aligned with the clients’ vision, resulting in a bathroom that was modern, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing.

The walk-in shower, selected with Garry’s guidance, provided a practical solution that catered to the mother’s needs while also enhancing the overall usability of the space.

The removal of the walk-in bath, combined with the creative concealment of pipework, contributed to a more open and cleaner environment. The clients were thrilled with the transformation, particularly appreciating the thoughtful balance between functionality and style that was achieved.

Customer Testimonial

The clients shared their satisfaction with the project in a 5-star review on Trust Pilot:

"We found More Ability to be a very friendly, professional, and most of all, a helpful company to deal with. From Garry, our bathroom designer, to Joe Lomax, the surveyor, the service was first class. But I have to praise Chris, our plumber, who went above and beyond. The bathroom in our bungalow had to be totally replumbed, and the concrete floor dug up to sink the shower tray into the floor and relocate the existing drain. The work was top class, and now we have a beautiful bathroom."

This review highlights the high level of service and craftsmanship provided by the team, from design to installation, resulting in a bathroom that exceeded the clients' expectations.
